Presented by Fine Films Gravenhurst

Tuesday, April 7
Doors open at 6:30 PM; Show begins at 7:00 PM
$11 inclusive | General Admission
Note: HST & convenience fee applies for online purchases

In 1987, at the age of just 21, Marlee Matlin shattered expectations as the first Deaf actor to win an Academy Award® for her groundbreaking performance in Children of a Lesser God. Catapulted into the spotlight, she seized the moment to challenge an industry unprepared for her immense talent, emerging as a trailblazer not only as a performer but also as an author and activist. Matlin's incredible journey continued with standout roles in acclaimed projects such as The West Wing and the Oscar®-winning CODA, all while relentlessly advocating for greater inclusion and accessibility both within Hollywood and beyond its borders. Matlin opens up about her personal and professional struggles – her meteoric rise to fame, the challenges of navigating a predominantly hearing industry, the pain of a tumultuous high-profile relationship, getting sober and years of being overlooked by Hollywood – alongside her many triumphs. Director Shoshannah Stern reimagines traditional documentary storytelling, elevating ASL as the film’s heart and soul while removing conventional voiceovers and including open captions, creating an authentic and visually immersive experience. Through split-screen interviews with both Deaf and hearing contributors, the film weaves a poignant and inspiring narrative of Matlin’s legendary career, highlighting her tireless fight for inclusion and representation in an entertainment world that at first had no place for her.

The five track EP is a collection of songs dedicated to his friend and writing partner Abe Stoklasa, who passed away in November 2023. Doris & Ivy in the Home by Norm Foster

A Fundraiser for the Gravenhurst Health Hub A Community-led Initiative To Expand Access To Local Primary Care, Diagnostics, and Wellness Services For All Gravenhurst Residents.

Friday, April 24, 2026
Trillium Court 'The Rock Bar' Opens at 6 PM
Doors to theatre open at 6:30 PM; Show begins at 7:00 PM
Tickets: $35 plus applicable fees & taxes, Group Rate: $33 plus applicable fees & taxes

Doris and Ivy in the Home is a heartwarming and hilariously insightful comedy from celebrated playwright Norm Foster, bringing audiences into the lively world of Paradise Village, a retirement home where second chances bloom in the most unexpected ways.

When Doris Mooney, a bold and spirited former prison guard, arrives with her trademark blunt charm, she immediately shakes up the quiet routines of her new surroundings. Her infectious energy quickly zeroes in on Ivy Hoffbauer, a reserved former world‑class skier whose past fame contrasts sharply with her desire for solitude.

As Doris chips away at Ivy’s icy exterior, the two women form an unlikely but deeply touching friendship, one built on honesty, vulnerability, and the shared surprises of aging. Their dynamic becomes even more entertaining with the arrival of Arthur Beech, a dapper retired professor whose romantic sights are set squarely on Ivy. His earnest pursuit adds a delightful layer of wit, warmth, and comedic tension to the trio’s evolving relationship.

Filled with Foster’s signature quick‑witted dialogue and generous heart, Doris and Ivy in the Home celebrates the joys, fears, and freedoms that come with growing older. It’s a story that proves life doesn’t slow down after 70, it simply gets funnier, richer, and more meaningful. Audiences will laugh, reflect, and fall in love with this charming tale of friendship, romance, and embracing every moment with courage and humour.

Doris and Ivy in the home is staged by arrangement with Pam Winter, Gary Goddard Agency - GG Agency

The Gravenhurst Opera House invites you to experience Salon Concerts, an intimate new music series showcasing exceptional classical musicians twice a year on a Sunday afternoon. Held in the coziest of spaces in the Gravenhurst Opera House, these performances feature dynamic ensembles, quartets, trios, and more, offering an engaging and eclectic musical experience.

For Spring 2026, we proudly present Michael Arnowitt

Michael Arnowitt presents a vibrant and evocative program spanning the 1700s to today. At its heart are three captivating works by Claude Debussy. From Dawn to Noon on the Sea and Hommage à Rameau shimmer with the spacious colour and impressionist beauty for which Debussy is renowned, while the prelude The Interrupted Serenade reveals his gift for vividly portraying human character and emotion.

The concert opens with Bach’s joyful Gigue from the Partita in G Major, followed by the Adagio from Mozart’s String Quintet in G Minor, transcribed for piano by Arnowitt. Mozart’s music moves from warmth and lyricism to expressive intensity, unfolding as a deeply satisfying masterpiece.

The program also includes Variations on a Kentucky Folksong by George Walker, whose dynamic and powerful voice continues to gain long-overdue recognition. Walker was the first Black concert pianist, after World War II, to perform major piano concertos with America’s leading orchestras. James Grant’s Waltz for Betz, written in 1999 by the Huntsville composer and longtime friend of the pianist, offers a gentle and heartfelt interlude. The afternoon concludes with the spirited finale of Bartók’s Sonata for Piano — an exhilarating work energized by the folk rhythms and melodies of his native Hungary.

About The Performer

Pianist, composer, and creative producer Michael Arnowitt is widely admired for his refined touch, tonal imagination, and warm connection with audiences. His performances have taken him on seven European tours, with concerts in France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, as well as tours in Russia and Korea. He is also the subject of the documentary film Beyond 88 Keys, filmed in the USA and Europe.

The Washington Post, reviewing a special appearance at the National Gallery of Art, praised his “exquisite sense of touch, color and musical imagination.” He is currently completing a book of essays, What Makes Great Music Great, to be published by Fomite Press. Over the course of 26 years, Arnowitt presented the complete 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in an innovative series aligning his own age with Beethoven’s at the time of composition — an exploration of artistic growth and the psychology of aging.

His creative projects often expand beyond the traditional recital format. These have included performances pairing music with culinary tastings, collaborations with visual artists creating live paintings, multimedia programs combining photography and spoken word, and his newest venture, Sense and Sound — a multi-sensory concert experience engaging sight, scent, touch, and taste alongside music.
